Irn Bru Scottish Second Division 2008 - 2009

At the end of the season the team finishing in first place is automatically promoted to the Scottish First Division. The teams finishing second, third and fourth compete in a play-off competition with the ninth placed club from the First Division to decide the remaining promotion place. The same arrangement applies between the Second and Third Division, which effectively means that a club finishing next to last has a chance to avoid the drop. Stranraer were awarded a promotion place having been beaten in the play-off final when Gretna FC were demoted to the Third Division.

Alloas' new outfit is admirably suited to their nickname of The Wasps. At first glance it is not very different to the kits worn last season but instead of hooped sleeves, a black stripe now extends vertically down the sleeve and across the shoulder, while the hoops themselves are arranged differently. The away kit is unchanged.

The Red Lichties return to a more traditional look this season with a smart strip designed by the Spanish company, Joma. The maroon shirts are offset by a contoured white trim along the shoulders and sleeves and inside the torso. The away kit is a simple affair with minimal trim.

Ayr alternate between wearing black and white shorts so it is no great surprise that for 2008-09, they are once again wearing all-white. To commemorate 100 years of football at the club's home ground, the words "Somerset Park 1888-2008" are embroidered below the badge.

The reintroduction of white shorts and a deeper shade of gold will be welcomed by supporters who hanker to see their team play in a more traditional outfit than has been evident in recent seasons. In fact the combination of gold and black striped shirts with white shorts was worn by the club from 1922 until 1970 and has been revived several times since the 1980s. The all-gold sleeves and assymetric shoulder trim are a modern innovation. The green and white away kit is an off-the-peg outfit by Hummel that recalls the clubs original colours from 1903.

The Largo Trust suffered financial difficulties and was replaced by a new home shirt sponsor following a lottery in early March.

My thanks to Graeme Houston, HFK's regular contributor from Methil.

Last season's kits are being used again by the Blue Toon: designed by Hummel, these lack the repeated "V" motif that is usually associated with the Danish company. Instead pairs of chevrons appear in outline only while the sleeves and side panels are in a slightly darker shade than the main body.

Joma's latest version of the Spiders' hooped shirts combines tradition with a few modern touches - it is unthinkable that Queen's Park would ever play in anything else. The hoops now loop over the shoulder and there is a curved black flash on each sleeve. The change kit is in the usual blue and orange, the colours of the club's sponsor.

Designer: Puma

Sponsor: Penman Kirkcaldy Ltd

2008 marks Raith's 125th anniversary and to mark the occasion, Puma have designed a special commemorative kit that is based on the halved shirts worn in 1887. The badge is edged in gilt and has "125 years" embroidered below, while Puma's own logos are rendered in metallic gold. The overall effect is a striking kit that should be popular with supporters and collectors alike. The new away kit is an interesting shade of silver with crimson trim.
