The first ever World Cup goal was scored by the French player Lucien Laurent in the 19th minute. At half-time they were 3-0 up and although Carreño pulled one back for Mexico with 20 minutes left, Maschinot made it 4-1 just before full-time.

The French goalkeeper, Alex Thépot had to leave the field with a fractured jaw and Laurent spent much of the match limping after a fierce tackle by Luis Monti. France held out until the 81st minute when Monti put Argentina into the lead. Three minutes later the referee blew for full-time when the French player, Langillier, was through on goal. Play resumed only after vigorous French protests.

With both teams level on points the final game in Group 1 would be decisive (there was no mechanism in place to separate teams level on points at the top of the group). Stábile scored twice in a minute to give Argentina an early lead but Subiabre reduced the deficit almost immediately and with quarter of an hour played it was 2-1. It remained this way until nine minutes from time when Evaristo scored Argentina's third.
